Health and Well-being
Traditional medicine fosters holistic health by integrating individual, community, and environmental well-being.
The Gujarat Declaration emphasizes the importance of traditional medicine in promoting a holistic understanding of health and well-being that goes beyond individual care, extending to the community and environment. In many traditional systems, health is achieved when there is harmony within the body, mind, and natural surroundings. These systems focus on physical, mental, spiritual, and social health, highlighting the importance of community care and sustainability. Traditional medicine plays a significant role not as an alternative for underserved populations, but as a vital component of healthcare that supports individuals and communities in maintaining balanced and meaningful lives.
Planetary Health
Planetary Health emphasizes the interdependence between human health and the well-being of natural systems. It advocates for balancing human needs with preserving ecosystems to sustain future generations. This framework integrates concepts like EcoHealth, One Health, and Biodiversity and Health to address environmental challenges and their global health impacts.
Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) and Traditional Knowledge are vital to this vision. Rooted in accumulated knowledge and cultural, spiritual, and scientific expertise, they prioritize harmony between individuals and their environment, offering sustainable health solutions. However, biodiversity loss and habitat degradation threaten the resources essential for health care, food security, and sustainable development.
Protecting Indigenous and local knowledge systems is vital, especially in developing countries, where they support health care, cultural identity, and livelihoods. Integrating this knowledge into Planetary Health initiatives fosters collaboration to promote biodiversity, mitigate health risks, and ensure a sustainable future.
TM and the Health and well-being of people and the planet
Well-being, as defined by the WHO, encompasses physical, mental, and social health—not merely the absence of disease. In this context, Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) offers holistic strategies that prioritize the individual’s connection with their environment, family, and community, fostering emotional, mental, and physical harmony to strengthen health and prevent disease. These strategies align with the concept of critical health literacy, enabling individuals to actively participate in their health care by integrating personal skills with the support of health systems and professionals.
TCIM’s unique emphasis on person-centered care offers solutions beyond symptom treatment, addressing “upstream” determinants of health. By incorporating TCIM into health systems, communities gain access to preventive strategies such as stress management, occupational health, and self-care. Studies show the effectiveness of TCIM in promoting health, preventing diseases, and managing chronic conditions. These practices complement Western medical models, creating integrative approaches that prioritize overall well-being. By integrating TCIM principles into public health initiatives, societies can achieve a balanced, sustainable approach to health and well-being, ensuring care that is inclusive, community-focused, and aligned with broader socio-environmental goals.
